Existence
Existence is distinguishable interaction.
To exist is to be distinguishable through interaction. Something exists when it interacts differently from what surrounds it, in ways that can be picked out by some other interacting system. Without distinguishability, there is no thing; there is only undifferentiated background.
Exists = interacts distinguishably.
The primordial distinction
The universe begins not from matter, energy, or objects but from the first distinction: the breaking of symmetry in a perfect undifferentiated state.
Before distinction, there is no object, no relation, no information, no time, no observer. A perfectly undifferentiated state cannot contain identifiable things because nothing in it is separable from anything else.
The minimum sequence of existence:
undifferentiated state → distinction → interaction → information → structure → universe
Every act of existing, at every scale, is a continuation of this first distinction. The universe is what differentiation looks like as it propagates.
Objects are stabilized patterns of interaction
In ordinary language, objects exist: atoms, cells, people, stars. In the deeper relational view, an object is not fundamental. An object is a stabilized, distinguishable pattern within an interaction network.

Nodes and edges are not two ontological categories but two perspectives on a single fabric. Nodes are the regions where interactions cohere into recognizable patterns. Edges are the interactions connecting such regions. Neither exists without the other.
Existence has degrees
Existence is gradient, not binary. Patterns can be more or less distinguishable.
A rock exists through passive distinguishability. Its pattern is maintained by physical stability against the environment.
A cell exists through active distinguishability. It maintains its own distinction from the surround by continuously processing energy and information.
A mind exists through reflective distinguishability. It includes within itself a model of its own distinguishability and acts to preserve it.
Life intensifies existence. A living system actively preserves and regenerates its own distinguishability against the entropic decay that would otherwise diffuse it into background.
Existence and information
Information requires distinction. A bit exists only because 0 is distinguishable from 1. A gene exists because one sequence is distinguishable from another. A signal exists because it differs from noise.
Existence is the ontological side of information. Information is the distinguishable structure of existence.
The two are perspectives on the same phenomenon.
Existence in covolution theory
In covolution theory, life is not matter arranged in a certain way. Life is a self-maintaining, self-referential, distinguishability-generating interaction network.
A living system exists by continuously distinguishing self from non-self, signal from noise, nutrient from toxin, inside from outside, repair from damage. The organism does not exist alone. It exists through its symvironment: the mutually shaping field of organism and environment, in which the organism's distinguishability is dynamically maintained.
Aging, in this view, is the progressive loss of biological distinguishability. The boundaries blur. Signal-to-noise degrades. The cybernetic attractor of decay pulls the system toward indistinguishability from the background. Gerostasis is the active maintenance of distinguishability against this decay.

Existence begins when the undifferentiated becomes distinguishable. Life deepens existence by preserving distinction, generating information, and using interaction to maintain itself. Consciousness is existence becoming aware of its own distinguishability.
